According to a report from CNET, one of the Galaxy S8’s key features won’t be available in Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8.
Samsung’s new flagship features a dazzling design and some of the industry’s most advanced technology, including support for Gigabit LTE. You can thank Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chip (and Samsung’s own Exynos 8895 chip) for that.
It means the Korean company’s newest phone is more future-proof than anything on the market, prepared for the improved carrier speeds we’ve been promised for so long. And it’s something the iPhone 8 may not support.
CNET posits that Apple may utilize both Intel and Qualcomm chips in its upcoming iPhone 8, just as it did in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Unfortunately, Intel’s upcoming chip won’t hit Gigabit LTE speeds, which CNET says will force Apple to slow down the Qualcomm version so all iPhones are on the same level.
Gigabit LTE is only available in select markets, and not all carriers have rolled out support just yet. So, even if your Galaxy S8 does support the technology, you may not enjoy the theoretical speed boost. But the technology is a crucial step toward the roll out of 5G networks, which is still a few years down the road.
Apple has reportedly limited Qualcomm modems before, which is why CNET believes Apple will do it again with the iPhone 8. (There’s even a lawsuit over it.) If true, your carrier speeds may not be quite as fast as those experienced by Galaxy S8 owners, giving the device a leg up.
We’re still months away from the iPhone 8, and CNET admits that it has no clue what Apple will do with the upcoming device. There’s a possibility we could see the Cupertino company only use Qualcomm technology in hopes of keeping parity with Samsung, in which case iPhone owners will get to experience Gigabit LTE in markets that support it.
The iPhone 8 reportedly won’t hit stores until November of this year, so Apple still has plenty of time to think about it.
