Making its global debut this week is the iPhone 8 (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition.
While the name is somewhat of a mouthful, what you need to know is that this is the iPhone 8 in red. Everything else is the same but some of the revenue generated by this variant will help provide testing, counseling, and treatments for people with HIV/AIDS. Apple’s been one of the companies at the forefront of an initiative battling the disease around the world.
The iPhone 8 (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition will be available online in select markets on Tuesday, April 10. Then it’ll reach retail stores at the end of the week. Pricing is the same as other colors, but this one has a limited run. With that said, don’t wait to pull the trigger or it could be gone for good.
Apple is also introducing an exclusive (PRODUCT)RED accessory for the iPhone X. It’s a leather folio, allowing you to have full coverage front and back. The case is made from “specially tanned and finished European leather.” If the company’s other leather folios for the iPhone X are any indication, this one will cost a whopping $99.
The difference with the (PRODUCT)RED version, however, is that a portion of the proceeds will go toward the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Here’s how Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Vice President of Product Marketing, described the iPhone 8 in red:
“This special edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhone features a stunning red and black color combination and also offers customers the opportunity to make an impact in fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS.
We are proud to support (RED) with this bold new iPhone and hope customers think it is as special as we do.”
Since 2006, Apple has donated more than $160 million. (RED), which was created by U2’s Bono and the One Campaign, says that money has led to nearly 1 billion days of “lifesaving ARV medication that prevents the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies.” Apple and a number of other companies often release (PRODUCT)RED items throughout the year to contribute to the initiative’s mission.
