The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus may play second fiddle to Apple's iPhone X, but don't think for a second the devices aren't worth your time. They offer everything we loved about the iPhone 7 with some of the iPhone X's best features sprinkled in.
After testing the iPhone 8 for the past four months, we're still confident it's the best iPhone for most people. It features a stellar design, beautiful screen, and a very impressive camera. It also features wireless charging, something that's been a long time coming.
There are so many other small refinements, too. The iPhone 8 is among Apple's fastest and smartest devices, and the display is fantastic thanks to Apple's TrueTone technology. The feature adjusts the screen's white balance depending on ambient light, which your eyes will thank you for in the long run.
Beyond the obvious changes, the iPhone 8 is reliably great, easing users into the future, unlike the iPhone X which has a big learning curve. If you've ever owned an iPhone, you can pick up an iPhone 8 and instantly know how to use it. There's something to be said about the device's familiarity.
But despite the advanced technology on display, one can't help but feel the iPhone 8 is stuck in the past. Its design is dated and boring, and the display's bezels are chunky. Which isn't a bad thing for most people, but the difference is striking if you've ever held an iPhone X, which isn't an issue for most people.
The device also doesn't bring anything new to the table. Wireless charging has been available in competing devices for years, and True Tone technology was first introduced by Apple's iPad.
To be fair, the point of the iPhone 8 isn't to be groundbreaking or innovative; it's a collection of ideas improved by Apple's typical level of polish. If the future is what you're after, look no further than the $999 iPhone X.
After three months of consistently using the iPhone 8, there have been no surprises. And that was to be expected. For the Plus model, battery life is still incredible (over a full work day), and pictures are as impressive as ever.
If you don't need the frills of the iPhone X but want some of the device's features, the iPhone 8 is the way to go.
