A new feature inside of iOS 10 revealed itself to a MacRumors forum member recently. User “iWayne” published the above screenshot, which shows a secret feature we didn’t know about until now.
If your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus home button breaks, iOS has a software feature that allows you to continue using the phone until you get it into the shop for repairs.
“The Home Button May Need Service,” the warning message reads. “In the meantime, you can use the onscreen Home button below.” A small white circle appears at the bottom of the display that serves as an on-screen home button.
iPhone 7 has a backup plan
It’s a super-useful function we haven’t seen before. It seems plausible it might exist on other devices, too, but so far it sounds like it’s limited to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. These devices use different “haptic” home buttons without the physical moving parts offered in earlier iPhones. If that haptic engine fails, it seems Apple has a backup plan.
