History tells us the iPhone 6, Apple’s next big flagship, won’t be out until September or October. And while we still don’t know much about it other than potential screen size, more information about the handset on Friday began seeping onto the Internet. Do you want to know some potential specs? Sonny Dickson, who provided some pretty revealing looks at the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s before they were announced, has the details.
In a series of Tweets, Dickson says the iPhone 6 will be just 0.22-inches thick, thinner even than the iPhone 5s, which is 0.30. That difference doesn’t sound like a lot, but I can guarantee it’ll be hugely noticeable in your hand. Add a case to that (if that’s your thing), and the device will be no thicker than an iPhone currently is now. You’d expect the iPhone to get a little thinner if the device is indeed getting larger, so a decrease in that department isn’t all that unexpected. It gets better.
Dickson claims that the iPhone 6 will also sport an “Ultra-Retina” display, which he confirmed would be the actual marketing term Apple uses when the device is released. Devices today have all gone Full HD, so it makes sense Apple would follow suit. Instead of the current 326 ppi, Apple plans on boosting that up to 389 ppi, which will no doubt look stunning in a rumored 4.7-inch (or even bigger) form factor. Many devices today have over 400 ppi screens, so Apple’s iPhone 6 would by no means pack the most pixels (if this is true). But given how nice the iPhone 5/5c/5s screen looks, I would bet the iPhone 6 will look pretty darn nice.
In addition to the screen and thickness, Dickson claims Apple’s A8 processor will be clocked at 2.6GHz. Apple’s A7 chip with 64-bit architecture is already fast in its own right, but it sounds like Apple is going to step it up a notch yet again. With all the potential focus on health tracking, it would make sense for Apple to put more emphasis on processing power.
Dickson prefaces this information by saying, “These specs could be the real thing,” which means there’s a chance this is just a bunch of bologna. So far ahead of a possible fall reveal, having confirmation on specs outside of a secret Apple lab is unlikely, but information does have a tendency to hit the Internet, as we know. Dickson isn’t typically known for unveiling information, but given his track record last year with leaked device pictures, we’re inclined to listen.
Let’s talk in hypotheticals for a second. Putting together what (we think) we know, along with what Dickson revealed, and we get a much clearer picture: a 4.7-inch screen (with 389 ppi), Touch ID, advanced iOS 8, activity tracking capabilities, A8 chip clocked at 2.6GHz, and a body that’s just 0.22-inches thick. Chances are Apple will adopt a more iPad mini-like look, too, which will help to raise the iPhone’s design even more. Sounds like the iPhone everyone has been waiting for. Dickson also mentions that more iOS 8 screenshots are expected to hit Weibo, so we’ll see just how accurate his information is soon.
