When the iPhone 4s was released in 2011, Apple’s device quickly earned the title of best smartphone camera ever. Since then, the company has retained its reputation for offering an excellent camera experience, though its perch at the top has come under fire. With competition from the likes of Samsung, LG, Sony and even some old Lumias, the iPhone is quickly fading away as just another good camera. Has that changed with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus?
To find out, we put last year’s iPhone 6 Plus up against the iPhone 6s Plus.
This year, Apple finally decided to upgrade the iPhone’s camera from an 8-megapixel sensor to a 12-megapixel one, promising sharper, “awe-inspiring” photos. Apple says it added a “state-of-the-art sensor, new image signal processor, advanced pixel technology, Focus Pixels, improved local tone mapping and optical image stabilization” into its new iPhone 6s Plus. That’s mostly just a bunch of marketing mumbo jumbo, though it does indeed result in some impressive results.
To get the best feel for how these devices compare, we used them in different shooting situations, including outdoor, indoor, low light, and more. We don’t get too scientific—this isn’t a DxOMark test. Rather, we used them how we normally would to get enough of an idea about whether or not the iPhone 6s Plus’ camera really is that much better or not.
Also remember that the new iPhone 6s Plus’ 12-megapixel sensor allows users to shoot 4K video, and the new phones also have a neat new Live Photos feature, which takes video immediately before and after a photo is taken. The perks are there, but if you own an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, is it really worth it to upgrade?
