Yesterday’s match-up between the LG Nexus 5 and the LG G Flex was a complete blow-out. The Nexus 5 ended up beating the G Flex by 82 percent to 18 percent. Probably our largest margin ever in Mobile Madness. I suppose we can attribute the win to more readers preferring a stock version of Android, and maybe the G Flex is just too gimmicky for mass consumption. At any rate the Nexus 5 wins this round and will go on to face the winner of our next pairing, the iPhone 5s or the Nokia Lumia 1020.
The iPhone 5s stands as Apple’s flagship device, and love it or hate it, the original iPhone changed how we look at and use smartphones. Historically the “s” moniker on iPhones usually doesn’t denote huge shifts in design or technology, the 5s has a few tricks up its sleeve, however: A7 processor, M7 processor, Touch ID, and one of the better camera experiences on the market.
The Nokia Lumia 1020 stand out amongst all flagship devices, not just Windows Phones. Most noticeably the 1020’s camera is a big selling point. However one of the biggest hurdles for the platform was a hobbled app store. Though it appears most popular apps are now covered (most of those being added on in about the last 6 months). The 1020 is the best smartphone available for WP, except for say the Lumia 1520, but will it be able to beat Apple’s iPhone 5s?
Which device do you see winning this round? The iPhone 5s or the Lumia 1020? You decide.
Apple iPhone 5s
iPhone 5s Video Review
The company took the stage in September and announced the iPhone 5s alongside the iPhone 5c, the first time ever that it revealed two devices at the same time, and in this review we’re going to focus on the more powerful iPhone 5s.
It’s available on a gamut of carriers starting at $199 and, while the body looks nearly identical to the iPhone 5, there are a lot of hardware changes that need to be discussed, including the Touch ID fingerprint reader, a new camera module, brand new software and more.
Is the iPhone 5s simply a small update to Apple’s smartphone line, or a device worth an upgrade even for iPhone 5 users? We’ll cover that and much more, so let’s dive in.

Nokia Lumia 1020
Nokia Lumia 1020 Review Video
Nokia unveiled probably the most stunning camera phone ever in February 2012 when it introduced the 808 PureView. It was amazing – a huge camera sensor was attached to the back, and it was leagues better than any other offering. Ever since that date I have desperately wished that Nokia would add the technology to a Windows Phone. I always imagined a modern day smartphone experience with a camera that could blow every other phone out of the water.
My dreams came to fruition earlier this month when Nokia officially announced the Lumia 1020, a Windows Phone 8 device with a 41-megapixel camera with granular manual controls and a beautiful industrial design. Unfortunately, that all comes with a sky-high $299 price tag on contract, which isn’t exactly a drop in the bucket, and a mobile operating system that started showing its age months ago.
Jonathan Rettinger and I have been testing the Lumia 1020 for several days now. I’ve been carrying it as my daily driver and I have no short term plans to replace it. Let’s dig into what the Lumia 1020 offers, what’s good and what’s bad, and whether or not this is the right choice for you.
