We already know that the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 are still among the top selling smartphones in the United States, and now a new report suggests that the phones are still incredibly popular around the world, too.

In fact, Strategy Analytics said on Wednesday that the iPhone 5 has, for the first time ever, surpassed the Samsung Galaxy S III as the most popular smartphone on the planet. Apple shipped 27.4 million iPhone 5 units during the fourth quarter of last year, the research firm said, representing a 13 percent share of global smartphone shipments. It also shipped a reported 17.4 million iPhone 4S units, which represent an 8-percent grip on global smartphone sales.

Meanwhile, Samsung shipped 15.4 million Galaxy S III smartphones during the same time period, which represents a 7.1 percent share. In other words, Apple shipped more units of its older iPhone 4S than Samsung shipped Galaxy S III units. It’s possible, even likely, that the decrease in demand is related to consumers waiting for Samsung’s Galaxy S IV flagship smartphone, which the company is expected to announce on March 14.
