iPhone 4S in Hand

October 4 was a crazy day for the world of technology news with Apple finally unveiling the iPhone 4S.  Even though it wasn’t everything we quite expected (Hello?  iPhone 5?  Where are you?) it was still full of interesting tidbits, but some may have slipped past you in all of the craziness, so here are some of the highlights.

Initial iPhone 4S Disappointment

It became clear pretty rapidly that the world was not thrilling to the idea that this was such an incremental upgrade to the iPhone 4 that had debuted 15 months ago.  The stock market reacted almost immediately, seeing share prices drop by around five percent in short order.  By the end of the day the values had just about evened out, but the gut reaction was that the 4S was not what everyone was hoping for.  Judging by the response of our readers in our iPhone 4S: Success or Disappointment? poll, currently 73.51 percent of those that chose to participate found it to be a let down.  This can’t bode well for the next year or so at Apple.

Siri, Siri, Siri

The most exciting new feature of the iPhone 4S was the integration of Siri into the phone.  While it has been a popular third-party tool, now having the ability to speak commands to your phone seems to have gotten everybody pretty excited.  And in the fact it won’t work on any of the older iPhones, and it makes the 4S just slightly more desirable.

Sprint and the Price Drop

Shoved to the end of the iPhone 4S presentation were possibly two of the most intriguing bits of information: The addition of Sprint as a carrier in the United States – for the iPhone 4 as well as the iPhone 4S –  and the price drops for the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4.  These two announcements combined make it fairly clear that Apple is tired of Android being the dominant operating system while they are the leading handset manufacturer.  By adding a third major carrier, and making the 8GB version of the 3GS free on a two-year contract, it should be fairly obvious that this year’s release was more about taking back some of Android’s gains.

There was a lot to be said yesterday, and we tried to cover every nook and cranny of it for you.  If you feel like catching up, or just reliving the day, be sure to head over to our iPhone 4S page to find all the goods.
