The iPad didn’t just change the entire industry when it was announced, the device still has enough power to sway the market even today. Why? Because new iPads help spur consumer interest in tablets as a whole, research firm IDC said recently. Since a new iPad hasn’t been released in almost a year now, IDC said that Apple can be partially to blame for fewer tablet shipments across the entire industry.
Apple shipped 14.6 million iPad units during the second quarter of 2012, far fewer than the 19.5 million it shipped during the first quarter of this year. IDC said that the lack of shipments is likely because Apple didn’t introduce a new iPad during the quarter, as it did last year. The company’s total market share during the quarter was 32.4 percent, too, down 14.1 percent year-over-year. Meanwhile, Samsung, Asus, Lenovo and Acer jumped at the chance to grab Apple’s sacrificed market share. Samsung’s growth jumped 277 percent year-over-year while Asus’s market share increased 120.3 percent, Lenovo saw 313.9 percent growth and Acer’s share increased 247.9 percent.
Despite those bumps, shipments were down. IDC said that total shipment volumes declined 9.7 percent from the first quarter of this year, though year-over-year the shipments were up 59.6 percent. “A new iPad launch always piques consumer interest in the tablet category and traditionally that has helped both Apple and its competitors,” said Tom Mainelli, Research Director,Tablets at IDC. “With no new iPads, the market slowed for many vendors, and that’s likely to continue into the third quarter. However, by the fourth quarter we expect new products from Apple, Amazon, and others to drive impressive growth in the market.”
IDC warned that vendors can “rise and fall quickly” as a result of the volatility of the evolving tablet market. “Apple aside, the remaining vendors are still very much figuring out which platform strategy will be successful over the long run,” IDC Mobility Tracker program manager Ryan Reith explained. “To date, Android has been far more successful than the Windows 8 platform,” he added, noting that Microsoft’s products are starting to make “notable progress.”
IDC found that Android as a whole has a 62.6 percent of the global tablet market, up 162.9 percent year-over year. iOS has a 32.5 percent share of the market, down 14.1 percent year-over year, but Windows – as Reith explained, has increased its market share by 527 percent year-over-year to a 4 percent grip on the market.
