AU Optronics has finally been able to catch up with demand for the first generation iPad mini displays, so now seems like the perfect time to start work on the screen for the iPad mini 2.

According to DigiTimes, which has a hit-or-miss track record when it comes to Apple rumors, AU Optronics has finally caught up on its panel shipments for the first generation iPad mini and is turning its attention to whats to come. In regards to the second generation of the diminutive member of the iPad family, the report simply states that the firm has begun work on the panels, but it does not give any sort of timeline as to when we might see an iPad mini 2, or what type of display it will be.

Ever since the launch of the original iPad mini late last year, rumors have circulated that a second iteration of the device would feature a Retina Display like its big brother. That seems to be an obvious route for Apple, and an immediate way to suggest to consumers why they would need a new version over the older one.

Apple, of course, has not yet provided any comment on what its plans are for the second generation.
