There have been rumors circulating that Apple has brought in outside help to work on notifications and widgets in iOS, but there was no hard evidence out there of what was going on. Well, it seems that possibly the “outside help” has been pinpointed, and, if true, it could be time to get excited about the changes to come.
Peter Hajas is the man behind a popular iOS modification called MobileNotifier that “is a total rewrite and re-imagining of the iOS alert system.” As you can imagine, it’s only for an iPhone that’s been jailbroken, but that hasn’t stopped it from gaining in popularity.
How does someone who runs an app only available with jailbreaking get involved in a story about Apple brining in “outside help?” In a recent blog post on his site, Mr. Hajas announced that he was going to have to take a break from his projects due to other projects and opportunities arising. He says that he can’t discuss what he’s going to be doing, but he signed off the post by saying, “stay hungry and stay foolish.” As a few people have noted, this is how Steve Jobs ended a commencement speech he gave once While not a smoking gun, it is certainly an interesting choice of words when you put together the pieces. There is every chance he may just like the quote, or he could be giving a hint. Only time will tell.
There is no doubt that the notification system in iOS is in desperate need of an overhaul. There have been many theories on how notifications should be handled in iOS 5, the next iteration of the operating system, but no official word that Apple was even looking at changing things up. The only thing that is somewhat concerning is that Mr. Hajas made this post on May 27th, and the WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) begins on June 6th, which is where a lot of people speculated iOS 5 would be shown off. Was he brought in for final touch-ups? Is iOS 5 not going to make an appearance at the show? This speculative tidbit raises almost more questions than it answers.
We’ll see with time what’s going on, but it certainly feels like something is about to happen with iOS notifications, and Mr. Hajas may be part of it.
What do you think? Did Apple contract Hajas to work on iOS notifications?
