One new feature that will be introduced in iOS 9, Apple’s new mobile operating system that will roll out to consumers on September 16, is a new “Hey Siri” voice training application. That’s going to be particularly useful for folks who can’t seem to get Siri to answer them — like me — and particularly the added support of the new ability to say the “Hey Siri” command from anywhere on Apple’s new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.
The feature was spotted in the Gold Master release of iOS 9, which rolled out to developers this week and is the final version before the consumer release. 9to5Mac said you’ll be asked to speak a few voice commands so that Siri will begin to recognize your voice to respond when called upon.
The function sounds similar to Google’s “OK Google” voice training model, which is inside Google Settings on Android devices, though 9to5Mac said it doesn’t appear to learn a user’s voice to distinguish one person from another. It’s simply meant to help make “Hey Siri” more accurate.
The voice training requires you to say “Hey Siri,” “Hey Siri” a second time and, finally “Hey Siri, it’s me.” 9to5Mac said it’s proving to be quite accurate so far. Look for it on September 16, though keep in mind the command will only work when older iPhones are plugged in for charging.
