The new mark is especially impressive when you consider how fast Instagram reached it. After announcing it had reached 600 million users back in December, it has taken the service four months to grow by 100 million.

Instagram has put a great focus on making its platform more accessible by adding more enticing features. It added Stories—a stolen feature from competitor Snapchat—and recently revamped Instagram Direct.

Instagram has come a long way

When Instagram first launched in December 2010, it took nearly three years to reach 100 million users. It took it another 13 months to reach 200 million. Now, it’s getting closer and closer to reaching the hallowed 1 billion user mark, something services such as Facebook and WhatsApp have surpassed.

At the rate it’s going, it might even reach it before the end of the year.
