So far, I love what Motive and DICE are doing with Star Wars Battlefront II‘s story. This time around, players will actually get the single player campaign they were dying for after the original rolled in and out of mainstream consciousness.

That’s not exactly what excites me, though. I’m especially excited for the fact that, for at least part of the game, we’ll be playing as an elite Imperial trooper.

Polygon has it from Mark Thompson, game director at EA’s Motive, that they wanted to flip the script and look at the Empire the same way we’ve always looked at the Rebels.

“We wanted to give the Empire heroes in that same way…

…Who are the elite soldiers on the battlefield who strike fear into the rebels? Who are the elite pilots that kids growing up [as citizens of the Empire] look up to and aspire to be?

We settled on this idea of telling a story from the Imperial perspective. The idea of special forces soldiers gave us this chance to become a new hero.”

We came sort of close with Republic Commando!

In Republic Commando, you may remember playing as an elite squad of Stormtroopers. That happened, sure, but they were clone troopers, I suppose. It was between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, only they aren’t really bad guys at this point. It’s in that grey area before the clear lines of the Empire and the Rebels.

This? This is straight up playing as a “bad guy,” and that’s cool.
