The eternally famous Ike joins the cast of Nintendo’s all-star fighting game Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS. And the crowd rejoices!

…Who exactly is Ike you wonder? Fans of the Fire Emblem series will recognize him as the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance on the GameCube, which is not exactly the best renowned or beloved Fire Emblem game in history. He also appeared in its direct sequel Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn on the Wii and as a fighter in the Wii game Super Smash Bros. Brawl, making this his second appearance in a Super Smash Bros. game.

To many’s scorn though, Ike is the character who replaced Fire Emblem star Roy from Super Smash Bros. Melee. Roy and Marth’s appearance in the GameCube fighting game opened the doors for Nintendo’s long forgotten Fire Emblem series to succeed in America, and the two became inseparable from not only Fire Emblem, but also the Super Smash Bros. franchise.

Without them, Fire Emblem would have never made it to America and many of us would still be ignorant to its existence.

Ike came afterwards, after Fire Emblem was already a hit in America, making his choice seem a bit more “ho hum” than that of Roy. What seals the deal for Ike appearing in Smash Bros and not Roy is simply that in America, Ike’s Fire Emblem games were translated into English, and Roy’s were not. Roy appears briefly as the son of the Game Boy Advance Fire Emblem‘s protagonist Eliwood, but the game were he stars as the protagonist remains unlocalized for American audiences.

Ike is a weird choice, but I will accept it I suppose just because Fire Emblem is a great series that needs more recognition. I would have preferred Roy or perhaps a female from the Fire Emblem series like the Game Boy Advance game’s other lead character, Lynn, but that might have been asking for too much.

Ike is the 30th character to be confirmed for Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS. As always, I’m still holding out for Wario and Captain Falcon, but now I am also cheering for the idea of playing as Lynn. Who else are we waiting for?
