Ice Climbers

Alas, Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai has confirmed with Famitsu our darkest beliefs on why the Ice Climbers did not make the cut in the latest game in Nintendo's all-star fighting series.

Despite securing a spot in both the GameCube's Super Smash Bros. Melee and the Wii's Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the power of the limited Nintendo 3DS did not allow for both Popo and Nana to be rendered at a single time.

Imagine a match of Super Smash Bros. in which eight characters instead of the standard four would require the Nintendo 3DS' dedicated resources. Not going to happen, sorry. The team originally had the pair playable an early build of the Wii U's version, the team decided to cut them all together to keep the rosters identical.

This also rules out any future DLC updates which will grant them exclusively to the Wii U version as the rosters will always remain the same. Sakurai said it was a tough call, but the fact that Nintendo is not making new Ice Climbers games made the decision much easier.

I talked a lot of smack on the Ice Climbers over the course of Super Smash Bros. marketing phase, claiming that they were annoying characters which led to the fake nostalgia a lot of people had towards them. Super Smash Bros. Melee actually convinced Nintendo fans that Ice Climbers was a good game! Ha!

Now that they are gone, though, I kind of miss them. They had their charms, and their levels were a lot of fun in Super Smash Bros. Melee's single player modes. We move on to bigger and better things though with a genuine classic filling in two characters for their absence, Duck Hunt's Dog and Duck. How awesome is that!?
