A lot of very good phones were announced in 2018, but one that stood out more than most was the Huawei P20 Pro. Widely considered to have one of the best camera packages ever on a smartphone, the P20 Pro featured the world's first triple camera on a smartphone.
It also looked the part, with a stunning twilight gradient ushering in an era where smartphones can be more than one color. Combine that with fast performance and vastly improved software, and it's easy to see why we were so enamored with the P20 series.
Fast forward a year, and it's time to look ahead to see how Huawei can improve upon last year. This year has already seen Samsung, LG, Sony, Nokia and others bring their A-game, so it's going to be a challenge for Huawei. That said, the world's number two smartphone manufacturer seems to have a few tricks up its sleeve.
Here's everything we know about Huawei's new P30 series!
The latest Huawei P30 + P30 Pro news
You can now pre-order the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro in the US through B&H
Although Huawei isn't planning to officially sell the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro in the US, you'll soon be able to get your hands on one easily thanks to B&H!
The online retailer has just opened pre-orders for both the Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro, and is pricing them at $600 and $900 respectively. The former comes with a year's limited warranty, while the warranty on the latter is unclear.
Both phones come with free shipping once they're on sale – the P30 is expected on April 29, while it's unclear when the P30 Pro will be available – as well as 3 months of Mint Mobile service. They should work fine on the T-Mobile and AT&T GSM networks – we've been using our unit on T-Mobile in the US with no issues over the past few weeks!
March 21 – Huawei P30 and P30 Pro appear in leaked marketing images
We've now got our best and most official look at the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro thanks to some leaked marketing images.
The renders showcase the phone's design, including the water drop notches, three cameras on the P30 and four cameras on the P30 Pro. They also confirm some of the specs we've heard about, including that they'll (unsurprisingly) be powered by the Kirin 980 and have an in-display fingerprint sensor. Most importantly, we now know the P30 Pro will have up to 10X Hybrid Zoom thanks to its periscope camera, while the regular P30 will support up to 5X Hybrid Zoom.
We're less than a week away from the big reveal where we'll see everything Huawei has to show us.
March 20 – This video shot on the Huawei P30 Pro gives us an early look at the periscope zoom camera
Huawei has already confirmed that the P30 Pro will have a periscope zoom camera, and a new video by filmmaker Parker Walbeck has given us an early look at what the zoom is capable of. Walbeck says he shot the video with an unreleased smartphone, and the timing suggests this was captured on the P30 Pro.
What stands out most from the videos is the level of zoom. During the video, Walbeck shows off the phone's ability to zoom into details that are far away with almost no loss in quality. Huawei hasn't revealed the exact specs of the P30 Pro's Periscope camera, but based on this video, we can expect it to offer more than the 5X Hybrid Zoom offered in the P20 Pro.
Huawei will unleash its new devices on March 26 and we're excited to see what the company has in store for us.
March 14, 2019 – the Huawei P30 Pro look stunning in "Sunrise" red color
There's less than two weeks before Huawei launches the P30 series in Paris, and a leak by WinFuture today has revealed the P30 Pro looks absolutely stunning in this striking 'Sunrise' red color.
Although not as technically impressive as the twilight gradient on the P20 Pro last year and on other renders from this year, Sunrise looks to be a great addition to the P30 Pro's color options. In particular, very few companies offer a red color device so this may be one of the ways the P30 Pro can stand out.
The leak also reveals the bottom and top frames of the device, where the biggest news is that – like the P20 Pro – the P30 Pro will not feature a headphone jack. It's nice to see that there'll still be an IR blaster, but the protruding camera bump does concern us a little.
March 12, 2019 – More specs leak thanks to certifications
Two new Huawei-branded handsets received certification in Taiwan in February and March. The model numbers were ELE-L29, and VOG-L29, which we expect to be the P30 and P30 Pro, respectively.
The certification revealed some interesting information. The P30 will come in both 6GB and 8GB versions, with base storage starting at 128GB and going up to 256GB. The P30 Pro should feature similar storage options, although it will come with 8GB of RAM as standard. The P30 and P30 Pro are likely to be powered by Huawei's latest Kirin 980 processor.
A lower-end P30 Lite was also certified – with model number MAR-LX2 – and it should feature a cut-down specs list that includes a mid-range processor.
February 27, 2019 – Huawei P30 Pro will feature 10x Optical Zoom
Huawei has already confirmed that the P30 Pro will feature a fourth periscope-style camera and now WinFuture has revealed that that periscope camera may enable the P30 Pro to capture images with up to 10x Optical Zoom.
Alongside this leak, the publication has also revealed new renders for the P30 series which look glorious in these beautiful gradients. The images also reveal slight differences in the design of the two displays, with the P30 expected to keep flat edges while the P30 Pro curves the edges of its screen.
All the big details
Huawei officially unveils P30 and P30 Pro
At an event in Paris, Huawei officially took the wraps off the P30 and P30 Pro. As you'd expect, the company's new flagships are incredibly powerful. And they're beautiful, too, featuring an all-glass design in some really striking colors.
Huawei has also shrunk the notch to be more of a tiny circle, while the company has stuck some incredible specs into the P30 Pro's chassis. Speaking of which, the P30 Pro features four cameras, which enable 10x hybrid zoom without any loss in detail, making for a more flexible camera experience.

Huawei P30 Pro camera
While the P30 Pro's design and specs are a big deal, it's the camera department where it really stands out. The P30 Pro features four cameras, elevating the experience above the competition.
One of the major standouts is the P30 Pro's zoom capabilities. Not only do you get 5x optical zoom, but the P30 Pro offers 10x hybrid zoom without any loss of detail, according to Huawei.

Huawei P30 and P30 Pro design
The Huawei P30 series continues the P-series DNA, with a focus on photography and style. As expected, the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro follow a similar design language to the Huawei P20, with a few welcome upgrades.
The gradient is still present on the back of the phone, but the regular P30 has three cameras versus just two on last year's P20. The front features a 6-inch display with a small waterdrop notch and reduced bezels compared to the P20.
The volume rocker and power button are both on the right, whereas the bottom houses the USB-C port and a headphone jack. On the P30 Pro, however, there's no headphone jack, continuing the model of the P20 Pro which also dropped the headphone jack.
The P30 Pro looks almost identical, but the camera array on the rear looks markedly different. The P30 Pro adds a fourth camera, with it being housed in a secondary section beneath the main three camera array.
How much will they cost?
In the UK, the Huawei P20 launched with a retail price of £600, while the P20 Pro launched for £800. The pricing of the Huawei P30 is pretty similar.
- 6GB RAM with 128GB of storage (€799)
Huawei P30 Pro
- 8GB RAM with 128GB of storage (€999)
- 8GB RAM with 256GB of storage (€1,099)
- 8GB RAM with 512GB of storage (€1,249)
Neither phone is expected to officially be sold in the US, but it didn't take long for the P20 series to be available via third party retailers on Amazon and eBay. We're expecting the phone to have a slight markup in the US when they do become available
