Huawei announced its newest computer, the MateBok X Pro, at CES earlier this year. The follow up to last year’s MateBook X is more of an iterative upgrade than a revolutionary one, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less interesting.
Much like its predecessor, the MateBook X Pro has a gorgeous design, with the crowning jewel being the nearly bezel-less 13.9-inch display, which supports touch. Huawei says it has 91-percent screen-to-body ratio, and it looks absolutely stunning. There is almost no bezel at all.
Huawei was able to achieve a nearly bezel-less display by moving the camera to a different location. Instead of being at the top of the display like most laptops, Huawei incorporated it into the keyboard. One of the keys on the top row is the camera; just press it and it pops up. Press it down and it hides, making it the sleekest way to hide the camera.
Like most premium laptops, the MateBook X Pro is built with an all-aluminum body that feels ultra premium. Sure, it looks just like a MacBook, but that’s what most laptops now aspire to be anyway. The dark gray version is even named Space Gray by Huawei. Not subtle at all.
Powering the laptop are Intel i5 and i7 processors with Nvidia GeForce MX 150 GPU and up to 16GB of RAM. That should be plenty of power for doing everyday task like browsing the web, editing video and light gaming.
Then there’s the fingerprint scanner, large trackpad, impressive battery life and solid port offering: two USB-C (one of which is Thunderbolt 3), one USB-A and a headphone jack.
Is the MateBook X Pro worth checking out? It certainly is. The MateBook X Pro checks off about every item you may want in a laptop. The only downside is its price, and there’s no indication the laptop is coming to the U.S.
