HTC LogoHTC, one of the tech industry’s most prolific handset makers, revealed the company is reflecting on its current “more is better” approach, instead concentrating on moving toward “slow and steady.” Judging from last quarter’s figures, something obviously isn’t working for HTC; the company recently announced its net income dropped an appalling 26 percent last quarter, its first drop in two years. So what are they going to do? Why, return to launching a few high-end devices annually.

Phil Robertson, HTC UK chief, said the company is looking back to reflect on what made HTC great in the first place: amazing hardware and beautiful customer experiences. And there’s no question it has a knack for combining both. Just look at the HTC Titan as the most recent example. (Or the upcoming Titan II.)

But caught up in last year’s marketshare war, Robertson admitted the company “tried to do too much.” Robertson said, “So 2012 is about giving our customers something special. We need to make sure we do not go so far down the line that we segment our products by launching lots of different SKUs.”

HTC reportedly has a pretty great lineup slated to be revealed at next month’s Mobile World Congress, smartphones that are aimed at upping the ante in order to compete with rivals Apple and Samsung. If the company can narrow down its approach and hit consumers with a more focused lineup, it’ll definitely be a step in the right direction.
