U.S. Soccer has been grabbing headlines recently for a variety of reasons. The USWNT won the 2019 World Cup, and have been welcomed back as heroes coast to coast. Now the U.S. Open Cup reaches the final four, and each are MLS teams seeking their first ever Lamar Hunt trophy. You can watch these MLS teams compete in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals on ESPN+.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is similar to the incredibly popular FA Cup of English football. This is a huge field, single elimination soccer tournament with a mix of professional and amateur teams competing for a title and a spot in the CONCACAF Champions league. The 2019 edition of the U.S. Open Cup started with 84 teams, with teams from the MLS, USL Championship, Leagues One and Two, the NPSL and eight teams as local amateur qualifiers.

The U.S. Open Cup has been going on since May 7, and they have eliminated all but the final four teams. All four semifinal teams are from Major League Soccer (MLS). The field includes two teams near the top of the standings in the current MLS season, as Atlanta United FC is second in the Eastern Conference, and Minnesota United FC is second in the Western Conference.

2019 U.S. Open Cup remaining schedule

  • August 6, 7:30 p.m., Orlando City SC vs. Atlanta United FC, Exploria Stadium in Orlando
  • August 7, 8 p.m., Minnesota United FC vs. Portland Timbers, Allianz Field in Minnesota

In the Quarter-finals round, Orlando City SC advanced over New York City FC in a thriller. The game went through full time and extra time knotted up, so the result was decided on penalty shots. Relive that finish with this video recap.

The Final of the U.S. Open Cup will be at the end of the month, but the details are still missing. That game will be either August 27 or 28, and the time has also not been set yet. However, based on draw, we know that the host city will be the winner of the Minnesota vs Portland semifinals game.
