Heavyweight boxing is hot right now, with recent upsets, viral knockouts and talk of upcoming superfights. Top Rank Boxing has one of the biggest names in the division, and he will be in the ring this weekend. You can watch him work by streaming Fury vs. Schwarz exclusively on ESPN+.
Fury vs. Schwarz will be live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, June 15. The undercard event starts at 7 p.m. Eastern time. The main event is expected to start at 10 p.m., and the entire event is on ESPN+.
Tyson Fury (27-0-1) may not have any belts currently, but he will be the first to remind you that he is considered the lineal Heavyweight champion. This can be confusing at first in our era of multiple belts, split champions, and titles being taken due to positive drug tests or refusal to fight challengers. The lineal championship comes down to a simple old phrase, and it ensures a single champion at any one time: "The man who beat the man." You become lineal champion by winning against the previous lineal champ, and it stays that way until someone beats you.
Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 to win five official heavyweight titles, plus the lineal championship. While he still claims to hold that title, since he hasn't lost since that fight, most officially consider that lineal championship vacant. Fury failed drug tests in the lead up to a rematch with Klitschko, and he relinquished or was stripped of his title belts. He also lost his boxing license, and was considered retired. Tyson fought for a heavyweight title again on his comeback, but the bout ended in a draw with Deontay Wilder, who retained the belt. Fury and Wilder are looking forward to a superfight rematch in early 2020, so long as each win their next fights.
Tom Schwarz (24-0) aims to spoil the build up to a superfight by scoring a giant upset of his own. He is undefeated, with an impressive 16 knockouts, but he isn't very well known as a fighter. This is only his first fight outside of either his home country of Germany or the Czech Republic. He has held a few regional and youth titles, but never had a shot at a fighter with a high profile like Fury. Schwarz believes he is his own man with a chance to win, but Top Rank head Bob Arum says Schwarz was picked because he is big like Wilder. That makes it easier to line up the long term goal of Fury vs Wilder, but Schwarz has promised to shock the world. Watch Tyson Fury talk to ESPN about the Ruiz Jr. upset, Tom Schwarz, and Deontay Wilder in this short interview.
The rest of the card, as always subject to change, is as follows
- Sullivan Barrera (22-2) vs. Jesse Hart (25-2)
- Mikaela Mayer (10-0) vs. Lizbeth Crespo (13-4)
- Andy Vences (22-0-1) vs. Albert Bell (14-0)
- Guido Vianello (3-) vs. Keenan Hickman (6-3-1)
- Isaac Lowe (17-0-3) vs. Duarn Vue (14-1-2)
- Cem Kilic (13-0) vs. Martez McGregor (8-1)
- Sonny Conto (2-0) vs. Daniel Infante (1-1)
- Peter Kadiru (3-0) vs. Juan Torres (3-1-1)
