Yes, you can totally play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online with your Nintendo Switch tethered to your phone for internet. That’s what the folks at GameXplain did. They used a T-Mobile connection over 4G LTE to get it done, and the video they produced showed a basically flawless experience.
Here’s that full clip.
Now, I may have noticed some minor stutters at the start of the battle, but the overall performance of the game when tethered was absolutely commendable.
How much data does it use?
As GameXplain states in the clip, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe used up around 130MB of data on their phone over the span of roughly 30 minutes. That’s not terrible if you have a large allowance of data, but it’s something you should absolutely keep track of if you decide to do this.
You know, when you absolutely must play Mario Kart and can’t wait for Wi-Fi. It happens to us all. Right? No?
