Kevin Spacey - House of Cards

House of Cards from Netflix broke new ground last night at the Emmys, and may have thrown open the door for alternative television.

Having already picked up two Emmy statuettes last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys – Casting For a Drama Series and Cinematography For A Single-Camera Series – House of Cards had already gone where no other non-linear program had. The big test, however, was the main awards show, the televised portion, and see if it could pick up any at the event that the majority of people pay attention to.

While the series didn't pick up as many awards as some expected it would, it still walked away with an award for David Fincher for Best Directing in a Drama Series.

Netflix has a long way to go to catch up with the likes of broadcast networks or Emmy powerhouse HBO, but this is a definite milestone in the history of streaming media. Services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and Crackle are all producing original content now and showing the industry that you can buck tradition and try out new broadcast models.

Congratulations to Netflix and everyone involved in House of Cards. Lets see if this starts a snowball into even more awards.
