Many gamers are interested in playing Horizon Zero Dawn, but the looming question hanging over the development is “How is this any different from every other open world action game?” That is the perception that Guerrilla Games is going to have to combat over the next few months to get people more excited.

Here is the first step: addressing the issue directly. In a video straight from PlayStation Blog, the team behind development all point out how they are approaching this creation of this world differently from everyone else.

That’s very different from an open world where the player has a lot more freedom to approach things the way that they want to see it. We had to start looking at the world from a 360 (degree) point of view, maybe looking at all the different directions that the player could approach, how things would look, how the vistas would look, all these different aspects.

Horizon Zero Dawn is Assassin’s Creed meets The Last of Us, right?

I’ve yet to see these differences that the video talks about, but then again, I’ve only played a small portion of the game through convention demos. It’s not exactly wrong to think it feels like Assassin’s Creed meets The Last of Us, combining stealth mechanics, ranged and melee combat, mashing scraps to make items, and the post-apocalyptic setting.

That’s not exactly a bad thing either. My favorite game of this generation so far is Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and it too has its problems of picking out some of the bland bits that work from other games and cramming it into a new shell. However, that game was able to create the Nemesis System, which adds a whole layer that its inspirations didn’t provide.

I’m still trying to see what Horizon Zero Dawn can call its own other than giant dinosaur robots. In the meantime, I still see it as the culmination of everything we’ve done for the past decade. Horizon Zero Dawn launches for the PlayStation 4 on Feb. 8, 2017.
