I still am not totally sure what to make of Horizon: Zero Dawn other than that I despise it’s title. The E3 2015 announcement was a surprising moment, and it turned plenty of heads and scored near universal praise from all who watched it.

On the surface, it looks like a wonderful RPG/shooter hybrid, and the Killzone engine does it all the favors in the world. The metal beings are stunning, and you really get a sense of its scale when our heroine brings the beast down.

You know me, though. I’m not approaching this game with totally open arms, but it wouldn’t be entirely fair to lay my concerns on Guerrilla Games’ doorstep. For one, I don’t trust reveal trailers and demos anymore as a few high profile examples have proven to us that games rarely look the same as they did when we first laid eyes on them. Horizon Zero Down will be beautiful, no doubt, but that beautiful? That remains to be seen.

My other concern is that I am just sick of open-world games. We’ve officially hit critical mass with Fallout 4, Metal Gear Solid V, Just Cause 3, Mad Max, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Batman: Arkham Knight, and let’s not forget the absolutely massive No Man’s Sky all being released within a year of each other. I mean, who has the time?  I feel like back when the JRPG hit critical mass on the PlayStation 2, and the genre eventually just swallowed itself whole. The same goes for AAA shooters at the turn of the decade.

Horizon Zero Dawn will certainly remain on my radar, but it’s up to Guerilla Games to convince me that its world should take priority over all the rest. It’s part way there, but I have three jobs, a family, and the JRPGs and platformers I enjoy on my Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita in my free time. As of right now, Hideo Kojima and Metal Gear Solid V have my full attention in the open-world gaming space.

Horizon Zero Dawn will be released on the PlayStation  in 2016.
