Casey Hudson left BioWare, where he’d worked on games like Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect 3, upon which he was director. Now he’s putting down roots at Microsoft as he joins Microsoft Studios as Creative Director, focusing in particular on the HoloLens team.

“I am extremely passionate about the potential of this kind of technology, as anyone who’s talked with me over the last couple of years can attest,” Hudson said in an interview on Xbox Wire.  “I feel that the work being done at Microsoft on mixed reality and holographic computing will have a tremendous impact on how all of us interact with technology in the coming years.”

In addition to the HoloLens project, though, Hudson will also be working with developers on “innovative new Xbox titles” and “driving a creative focus for Xbox and Windows gaming.”

Hudson was initially attracted to Microsoft’s augmented reality device after seeing an early prototype.

“I was blown away by the technology and what it was already capable of,” Hudson said. “Walking on Mars while sipping coffee in an office setting, Skyping with a friend who can draw on the walls of my environment, sculpting an object in 3D modeling software while a hologram of it sits on a table next to me.”

Those experiences, he said, pushed him in the direction of holographic computing, to where he is now.

I’m happy to see someone with direct experience creating games involved with the HoloLens team. And I’m not going to pretend that it wouldn’t be cool to see Mass Effect style holo-devices on my arms when I put the HoloLens on. I’m looking forward to seeing what Hudson brings to the project and Microsoft Studios.
