GameSetWatch made note of an enthralling, enlightening and odd interview response by Hideo Kojima, famed Metal Gear franchise designer, in the latest issue of Nintendo Power. Kojima's been known for being an outspoken, candid gaming personality. He's often been willing to both have fun and openly share his opinions concerning his work and the work of others.
His response to a question concerning the original Metal Gear for the Nintendo Entertainment System is no exception. Kojima had nothing to do with the first entry in the series. Even more than that, Hideo Kojima thinks the original Metal Gear sullies the rest of the franchise. He explains his stance and the title's success in a section of his response.
I had absolutely no participation in the development of the NES version. The NES version was a pitiful title developed cheaply and simply by a small team in Tokyo. That was during the bubble economy where anything and everything that was released would sell. I came across the game in a bargain bin and tried play it, but the game design is pretty bad. There is some gameplay that includes infiltrating a base that didn't exist in the original. However, even I, the developer of the original game, was unable to infiltrate the base even once.
Kojima attributes the game's success to an economy that made software sales easy. He, interestingly, seems to consider the entire project a mistake and a smudge on his record. The designer goes on to slam the game for an obvious flaw and, as he explains, the way it slights gamers.
Furthermore, being Metal Gear, it goes without saying that Metal Gear should make an appearance at the end. However, from what I've heard, due to the technically difficulties in displaying the sprite on the screen, they swapped Metal Gear out for a gigantic monitor. That made me see that whoever created the game had no sliver of appreciation for the players. However, even though it was an abomination, it was during the bubble economy and it sold millions overseas. That title has only soiled my reputation.
Despite Kojima's more than obvious disdain for the original Metal Gear, the series began to garner its large following at that moment in time. I'm sure some of our readers loved the first title in the franchise. If so, speak up. What about Metal Gear for the NES did you love?
