What you need to know

  • Based on the trilogy of books by Philip Pullman.
  • Stars Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
  • No release date has been shared, but HBO said it's "coming soon."

HBO on Friday released the first official teaser for His Dark Materials, a new fantasy show based on the trilogy of books by Philip Pullman. No release date was revealed, but HBO said it will available "soon."

The show will explore a parallel world where the souls of humans are represented by daemon. In Pullman's novels, these daemon are talking animals.

Pullman's first novel in the trilogy, The Golden Compass, was previously turned into a feature film, but it was poorly received by critics and audiences. The movie told the story of a young girl named Lyra, who is swept up in a sprawling adventure when children start mysteriously disappearing.

In HBO's adaptation, Lyra will be played by Dafne Keen, with Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, and Lin-Manuel Miranda also starring.

With Game of Thrones ending this weekend (although at least one spinoff is on the way), HBO is in need of a good fantasy show. His Dark Materials, along with Watchmen, looks like it'll fit that bill.

HBO didn't reveal when His Dark Materials will debut, instead sticking to a vague "coming soon."
