Well-known toy company Hasbro has announced that it has purchased the Power Rangers brand from Saban along with a handful of other properties.

It was announced at Toy Fair 2018 that Hasbro had acquired the master toy license for the Power Rangers brand from Saban. During the announcement, Hasbro stated that it had an option to purchase Power Rangers outright at a later date, but it sounded more like an option rather than a plan.

On Tuesday that indeed come to pass as Hasbro announced that it was purchasing Power Rangers along with My Pet Monster, Popples, Julius Jr., Luna Petunia, and Treehouse Detectives. The deal is valued at $522 million with the price being made up of $229.75 million in cash and $270 million coming from a new common stock based on the involved brands.

“Power Rangers is an iconic brand built on a heritage of great storytelling and merchandising with tremendous upside potential when fully executed across Hasbro’s brand blueprint,” said Hasbro chairman and CEO Brian Goldner.

Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters - Power Rangers Beast Morphers

The deal will kick off with the twenty-sixth season of Power Rangers, Beast Morphers, whish is based off of the thirty-sixth season of the Super Sentai franchise, Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters. There is no word as of yet as to when the new season will debut on Nickelodeon, but it should be in January or February 2019.

This isn’t the first time that Saban has sold off the Power Rangers brand. Saban Entertainment created the series in the United States and ran it through the end of 2001. At that time it was purchased by the Walt Disney Company which ran it until 2010 when Haim Saban purchased the rights back.  This time, however, feels a bit more final as Hasbro has won the toy rights away from Bandai America which had held them for 25 years.

Hasbro has been making a larger play into entertainment over the past decade with the Transformers film franchise and its upcoming cinematic universe. With these new properties this gives the company many more inroads into this growing field.
