Never mind the vastly smaller install base that the Xbox One has compared to the Xbox 360’s at the time of Halo 4’s release. The hype for Halo 5 proved to be real with Microsoft confirming that its most recent hit had the “the biggest Halo launch in history.” Or did Halo 4 actually reach more homes? Lots of questions about these figures.

Altogether, Halo 5 made $400 million in its first week on the market. This makes it not only the fastest selling Halo game, but also the fastest selling Xbox One exclusive. However, the figure that Microsoft threw out also includes the amount of hardware that it believes Halo 5 was responsible for moving. This includes consoles, bundles, and possibly even the Elite Controller.

One week after launching worldwide, Halo 5: Guardians has made history as the biggest Halo launch and fastest-selling Xbox One exclusive game to-date, with more than $400 million in global sales of Halo 5: Guardians games and hardware.

Other game publishers have bragged about their enormous launches in the past, but the figure usually includes just the sales figure for the game itself. If Microsoft chose to include the hardware the game hypothetically sold as well, are the actual software sales not all that impressive?

Halo 3 was the biggest launch in the series before at $300 million in software alone. Suddenly, when you take into account the price of consoles and other equipment these days, the $400 million seems like a generous get on how the game actually did.

Fans have logged more than 21 million hours of total gameplay, including 12 million hours in campaign mode alone. The widely praised multiplayer modes have also led to nine million total hours played with nearly seven million multiplayer matches played across Arena and the all-new Warzone mode. In addition, Halo fans are taking to the new Requisition System in a big way, with over 45 million REQ Packs acquired, totaling more than 568 million REQ Cards.

That’s a more important figure in determining how Halo 5 did, and it’s huge. No doubt, it is one of the Xbox One’s biggest assets. Xbox boss Phil Spencer also chimed in.

“The success of Halo 5: Guardians is a testament to the innovative work from the entire team at 343 Industries to bring this installment to Xbox One and the incredible community of fans who have come to love the story, characters and gameplay central to the franchise. The game represents all the possibilities of Xbox One and has earned its place as the anchor title in the greatest holiday games lineup in Xbox history.”

Microsoft isn’t really one to talk specific figures, so we might never really know how Halo 5 on its own holds up. It is available now on the Xbox One.
