Well, this is a bummer for all you local cooperative gaming fans. Halo 5: Guardians, a game that will likely be purchased aplenty by families and single folks alike, will not offer split-screen co-op within its campaign.
Siblings, roommates, couples and best friends, you’re out of luck. Heck, I romped through Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo Reach in split-screen local form, and I loved it. Now? Nope, that’s not going to happen.
The word comes from Game Informer‘s Halo 5: Guardians cover story. Game Informer has it concisely that split-screen local play is gone. The line in the story reads, “The only bummer is that split-screen co-op is not supported in Halo 5.”
Further, to play the campaign cooperatively with a friend, you’ll need an Xbox Live Gold account.
They did not make any mention of the reasoning for this decision or whether or not we’d see split-screen online play like we have for years now. Who knows? Some are suggesting that this comes in effort to preserve the 60fps gameplay at a high resolution. Maybe?
We’ll have more regarding Halo 5: Guardians soon. We’ll be checking the game out at E3, too, so stay tuned for our coverage. Halo 5: Guardians is set to hit the Xbox One on October 27, 2015.
