Star Wars: The Last Jedi was almost a lot different, and it is directly tied to who directed the movie. Rian Johnson didn’t just do away with conventional Star Wars ideas, he blew them up. One of these instances was the way he handled Rey’s parents.

Actor Simon Pegg recent talked on Happy Sad Confused about the different ideas J.J. Abrams had for Rey’s parents after The Force Awakens, and unsurprisingly, they were a lot different than what Rian Johnson implemented in the film.

J.J. Abrams took great care of developing Star Wars lore with The Force Awakens. This involved setting up countless teases for possible plot lines, one of which was the identity of Rey’s parents. All we ever find out in the movie is that they deserted her on Jakku.

Rian Johnson took the idea and carelessly tossed it aside by revealing they were junkers who sold her for drinking money. It was a disappointing answer to a burning secret. Had J.J. Abrams directed the movie, the answer would have been a lot different.

“Well I know what J.J. kind of intended, or at least what was sort of being chucked around,” revealed Pegg. “I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by [The Last Jedi]. I don’t know. I think Unkar Plutt is Rey’s real father.”

He continued: “There was some talk about, you know, a kind of relevant lineage for her. But I honestly don’t know, and I don’t know if anybody knows.”

After the release of The Force Awakens, it was assumed that Rey was related to a very important person who was likely Force sensitive, possibly even the Skywalker family. That may have been what Abrams had in mind judging from Pegg’s comments, but once Johnson took over, he went in another direction.

Abrams is returning to direct Star Wars Episode IX so there is a chance he shifts the storyline to fit his original ideas. It’s a long shot, but it’s a fun one to think about.
