It hasn’t been a great year for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Everything started to unravel in July when director James Gunn was fired over offensive tweets, launching the production of the movie into a tailspin that ended with the movie being delayed indefinitely. Thankfully, the movie just received a very positive update from an unexpected source, James Gunn’s brother, Sean Gunn.
Sean Gunn appeared in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies as Kraglin, Yondu’s second-hand man, and did the motion capture scenes for Rocket Raccoon. And being James Gunn’s brother, he’s naturally a well-placed source of inside knowledge on everything that’s going on with the production of Vol. 3. He revealed some of this knowledge in a recent interview that will give fans of the movie some hope.
“I don’t really know yet what’s going on with Guardians 3,” said Gunn. “I know that Disney still wants to make the movie. I know that they have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote. Obviously, that was a very unfortunate situation for everybody, most of all him, but I am also somebody who had been preparing to spend half a year making that movie and now it’s up in the air.”
There’s a lot to unpack there, but let’s start with the obvious. Sean Gunn confirmed Disney is still planning on using James Gunn’s original script, which was previously reported, but more importantly, that it is still planning on making the movie. That has been the biggest question we’ve had in the past few weeks as updates on the movie went radio silent.
However, aside from that nugget of positive news, he also pulled back the veil on how tough it’s been for the whole cast to endure the unforeseen delay. Actors like Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana, and to a lesser degree Sean Gunn, have busy schedules. As such, it’s imperative they make room for six-month shoots throughout the year, and the fact that the schedule was upended, it possibly delayed the movie even more.
As of yet, Disney and Marvel have not selected a director to replace James Gunn. It was reported the Kevin Feige met with Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi about a new project, though it remains unclear if the project they met about was Guardians Vol. 3.
In any case, Disney is still planning on making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is very good news. As for when that will happen, that is the million dollar question hanging over Sean Gunn and the rest of cast and crew.
