Following the firing of director James Gunn, the future of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was put in serious doubt. Now, production for the film has been put on hold as Disney looks to reassemble, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with the movie’s timeline being pushed back to an undisclosed date.
The fallout from Gunn’s departure has been messy, with all of the main cast calling for the director to be re-hired. Actor Dave Bautista even went so far as to threaten to quit if Disney didn’t use Gunn’s script, a draft of which was finished shortly be he was fired.
According to THR, sources close to the production have characterized the production freeze as temporary, with Marvel Disney now intent on finding a replacement. Fans and critics have called for Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to replace Gunn, but Waititi is currently busy with other projects.
Gunn has been the creative force behind the first two Guardians movies, and was expected to help usher in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hearing that the project’s future is now in doubt is seriously worrying.
Disney hasn’t said much after parting ways with Gunn, only reaffirming on its decision not to re-hire him. Whoever sits in the director’s chair by the time production picks up again, it’s going to be a monumental task that even the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes might not be able to save.
