Marvel has been quiet about the development of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The movie is in a suspended state after director James Gunn was fired this past summer. Now, the studio is apparently searching for a successor, with Step Brothers director Adam McKay a target.

McKay has enjoyed a long and successful career in Hollywood, directing Anchorman, The Other Guys, the Oscar nominated The Big Short and most recently Vice.

McKay revealed the interesting development talking to the Happy, Sad, Confused, Podcast. He confirmed that he was considered as director but that didn’t really go anywhere. However, that wasn’t the end of his possible involvement with Marvel. McKay revealed that after the Guardians 3 talks went nowhere, Kevin Feige talked to him about directing an Inhumans movie.

“We talked a little bit,” McKay said. “Yeah, we were kicking around the idea of the Inhumans at one point. We’re always kind of talking. I think Feige is just the greatest and what they’re doing is amazing.”

Like the Guardians talk, that didn’t really go anywhere either. It makes a lot of sense that he would be considered for Guardians 3. Much like Gunn, McKay comes from comedic roots, something that’s instrumental to the identity of the franchise.

In looking for a possible replacement for Gunn, McKay seems like the person you’d want to lead the next Guardians movie. Seeing as that didn’t result in a working relationship, both McKay and Marvel have moved on. But as he noted, him and Feige are always talking, so don’t rule out a possible McKay Marvel movie just yet.
