Yesterday, word spread that a relative newcomer had accepted a role in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The actress was Pom Klementieff. Variety had that report, and they also had news that Marvel and Director James Gunn wanted Matthew McConaughey to play the lead villain for the sequel.

McConaughey said no, though the site offers no reasoning. Marvel and Gunn are still looking for someone to play the villain, and Variety indicates that decision is a few weeks away. The film starts production in early 2016.

A few fans have started to speculate what role McConaughey was pitched, and why he might have turned it down. On the latter, the speculation is that McConaughey didn’t find the role interesting. It’s impossible to say, really.

On the former, most fan theories point towards Magus as the role Gunn and Marvel sought McConaughey for.

Magus is the evil doppelganger of Adam Warlock. Amidst his really odd features is the ability to create a regenerative cocoon. If you remember Guardians of the Galaxy, you may have spotted a cocoon in The Collector’s possession.

A crazy Matthew McConaughey makes sense for the role. If not him, though, who would you like to see as the potential Magus?
