Guardians of the Galaxy director answers all of your fan questions in one go

Eric Frederiksen
13 May 2018

The burden of knowledge is a difficult one to bear. Director James Gunn, as the mind behind the Guardians of the Galaxy films and one of the creative leads on Marvel Studios’ exploration of the Marvel cosmos, knows a lot of stuff we won’t get to know for at least a year, and a few more after that. He’s willing to share it, though, and took to Twitter to answers some of the most frequently asked questions about the Guardians and more.

Most importantly, he confirms and answers a few questions about Avengers 4 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for those that might be hanging onto a few hopes. The last Guardians film’s end-credits scene teased an MCU character named Adam Warlock. He plays a big role in the “Infinity Gauntlet” comics that inspired Avengers: Infinity War, so fans have been theorizing he might show up in Avengers 4.

Guardians Incredibly Frequently Asked Questions -
-Kraglin's fin at the end of Vol 2 is a different fin than Yondu's.
-Yes, I pick all the songs for the movies.
-The Guardians can travel light years in space, OF COURSE they can figure out how to power a Walkman/Zune w/o batteries

— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) May 9, 2018

“Adam Warlock will NOT be in Avengers 4 (and I’ve never said he will be in Vol. 3),” Gunn tweeted. The first part of that answers is pretty conclusive, but the second part seems to be phrased more for a matter of plausible deniability. Avengers 4 will be dealing heavily with a new character in Captain Marvel, so bringing in Warlock would be a tough story to balance. It makes sense that they would want too hold off on that. Gunn also confirms that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be set after Avengers 4. If you’ve seen Infinity War, that might give you some hints as to the real status of a few characters.

Gunn talks about Nebula in a later tweet to remind a fan that the way things go in the comics isn’t necessarily how they’ll go in the movies, stating that “MCU canon is different from [Marvel comics] canon.” The Infinity Gauntlet story ends up with Nebula playing a pretty significant role in its resolution, so it’ll be interesting to see how the Russo brothers and the Avengers 4 writers reconcile the two.

Some of his answers, though, are just about minor functional details that people like to nitpick. The Guardians are capable of faster-than-light travel, he says, so “of course they can figure out how to power [Peter Quill’s] Walkman/Zune w/o batteries.” The Guardians all have semi-universal, bi-directional translators implanted that let them understand and be understood by others.

I say semi-universal because Gunn adds that translators don’t work with Groot (or some other languages), and that the Guardians can now all understand Groot, as suggested in Infinity War. Maybe they don’t work with plants. Speaking of Groot, Gunn confirms again that Groot does not have any memories from the Groot depicted in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Gunn once again confirmed that he does, in fact, pick all the music for the movies, and added later that legendary rock band Queen hasn’t yet made it in because he’s “never found the right place/right song.”

Finally, just in case you haven’t watched the two Guardians films enough times, Gunn says that “the big Easter Egg has not been found (not in either Vol. 1 or Vol. 2).” He adds that there are a ton of not-yet-found Easter Eggs in the second Guardians movie, and assures us that he’s not making the Easter Eggs up.

Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3, 2019, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to release sometime in 2020.
