If you’re a Guardians of the Galaxy fan, it has not been an easy time. One of the MCU’s most popular entities was riding high off two fantastic standalone movies and an unforgettable appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, but that all came crashing down when director James Gunn was fired in July.

As a result, Drax actor Dave Bautista threatened to quitt and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was delayed indefinitely, and now the Guardians’ role in Avengers 4 may also change given the behind-the-scenes turmoil.

Recently Dave Bautista was speaking to Digital Spy about the role of the Guardians in Avengers 4 and mentioned that things may have to be changed given their third standalone movie was put on indefinite hold.

It’s kind of a strange situation to be in now where we’ve lost our director for Guardians. Guardians 3 is really up in the air and I don’t know what they’re going to do with it. It’s on permanent hold for now, and that may make a difference in what they do with our characters in Avengers 4. To be honest with you, right now I really don’t know. But I know I’m in Avengers 4. I’ve shot most of it already. I do have two days of reshoots. But other than that, I have some really great scenes that I hope they use. But I guess that it remains to be seen what they’ll do with the characters.

Bautista’s comments put the future of the Guardians in more question. If there is one thing Marvel likes to do, it is to set up some of its marquee franchises with storylines in the major Avengers movies. The storylines of the Avengers movies contained connections to future installments of specific characters such as Iron Man 3Captain America: Civil War, and Thor: Ragnarok.

Marvel was likely planning to do the same in Avengers 4 for Spider-Man: Far From Home and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but then the latter may have to be changed. Most of the scenes were shot already, as Bautista noted, but they may end up getting significantly cut as Disney figures out what to do with the cast of characters post-Avengers.

That would be a big shame as the Guardians’ interaction with Thor and Iron Man were some of the highlights of Infinity War. We were hoping for more of the same in Avengers 4, but that may not end up happening.
