You may have read that Grand Theft Auto VI would be released in 2019, but that’s absolutely false. The game isn’t even official yet. Yet there are several GTA Online players who’ve been fooled into thinking the franchise’s next installment will be arriving next year.
The online mode for GTA V is filled with a huge number of players almost five years after the game first went on sale. If you play on a computer (or even a console), you know how bizarre things can get. That’s because some players implement modifications to alter gameplay. From Marvel superhero costumes to world textures, it gives GTA Online a whole new experience.
As it turns out, the frenzy surrounding Rockstar Games’ next GTA title was born out of a mod. Someone sent a message to other players teasing GTA VI. Since it appeared legitimate, players thought Rockstar Games experienced a leak or intentionally surprised its community.
Rockstar Games didn’t need to say anything at all, but it elected to make a statement on Twitter. Here’s what the studio behind Grand Theft Auto said:
“This is a hoax made with the use of mods, and not an official message or statement from Rockstar Games.”
The hoax may not have been obvious from the start, but remember how slow the publisher and its development studios go to release any title. Rockstar Games typically focuses on a single game at a time. After GTA V was released in 2013, the company turned all of its attention to Red Dead Redemption 2. The Western-themed game is scheduled to finally be released on October 26, 2018.
Even after the next Red Dead is out, Rockstar Games could still choose to pick up another franchise to work on before GTA gets its turn again. GTA Online is still alive and well, giving players fresh content and generating money for Take-Two Interactive.
As always, don’t believe everything you read unless it comes from the company itself or a reputable media outlet.
