I suppose the first tip off regarding the true nature of the recent re-release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the Xbox 360 should have been its price. It’s selling for $3.74.

This isn’t a port of the PC version of the game, the version most would consider superior. It isn’t a remake of the Xbox version that was previously listed online. No, this version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a port of the one that graces the Android marketplace. Digital Foundry did the analysis, and San Andreas on the Xbox 360 is a mobile port.

The problem? The Android version of the game was built for much smaller screens than what we have on our televisions. This mobile port of an exceptionally old game offers no anti-aliasing (something the PC version has), and it’s capped at 30fps instead of 60. It simply looks like an Android game blown up on a big screen, not a remake of a classic.

This is a port of a lesser version of the game. The PlayStation 2 (that’s not a typo) version of San Andreas requires 4GB of space. The Xbox 360/Android port? 2GB. Gamers will get less music, no onscreen haze effects, stuttering frame rates and weird audio cutouts. Those problems aren’t present on the PS2 version of this game.

The bottom line? The Xbox 360 port of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is worth exactly $3.74. What a weird string of decisions regarding one of the most celebrated Grand Theft Auto entries of all time.
