It’s never been a better time to be a geek. In addition to a number of big-budget Hollywood films coming out before the year is up, some exciting new TV shows are scheduled to come out this fall as well—and these are in addition to TV shows like The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Arrow. Some really incredible TV shows from major TV networks have come out in the past few years, which has us really hyped up about what’s to come. If you’re a big TV person, here are a few new TV shows coming out this fall you should check out. So far TV networks Fox and NBC have announced upcoming TV shows, but once other networks unveil what’s on the horizon we’ll be sure to update this post..
Less about Batman and more about Commissioner James Gordon, Gotham focuses on Gordon’s job as a detective before Bruce Wayne becomes the Dark Knight. The show will also explore the city as a living, breathing character, and how it ultimately shapes the lives of some of Batman’s biggest villains. Ben McKenzie, a face and name you might recognize, plays the character of Gordon, while other big names, including Jada Pinkett Smith, are also attached. Ever had the desire to learn more about the origins of the Batman universe? Gotham promises to reveal a new chapter “that has never been told.” (Gotham)
Focused on the lore of ancient Egypt, Hieroglyph is an action adventure series that will see a master thief try to track down a mysterious and dangerous scroll. Here’s part of the official synopsis: “Having spent the past five years in the darkest of pits, Ambrose (played by Max Brown) quickly learns that his prison cell might be safer than the dangerous new world in which he finds himself.”
It’s not a typical show you’d find on one of the major TV networks, but it has just enough intrigue to generate the hype needed to attract an audience. This one come from the mind of creator/executive producer Travis Beacham, who also lent his talents to Pacific Rim and Clash of the Titans. (Hieroglyph)
Based on the U.K. series Broadchurch, Gracepoint is more of a murder mystery than geek fantasy. Still, this sort of gritty detective story is always entertaining, exploring the darker sides of the human condition.
When a young boy is found dead on an idyllic beach by a jutting cliff-face, a major investigation gets underway in the northern California seaside town where the tragedy occurred.
Gracepoint will follow Det. Emmett Carver (David Tennant, of Dr. Who fame) as he investigates the murder with Det. Ellie Miller (Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad). Meanwhile, Gracepoint will introduce viewers to several other complex characters as more secrets are uncovered in the small seaside town. (Gracepoint)
John Constantine is already a peripherally famous figure in mainstream media—he’s famous in the comic world, and made an appearance in an under-appreciated movie, where he was played by Keanu Reeves. But he’s going to become much more famous this year when a show based on the Hellblazer comics hits airwaves. Actor Matt Ryan looks pretty much like John Constantine, and buzz for this show is already positive; the first official trailer looks pretty darn good, sticking to its comic roots. This one is being produced by David S. Goyer, so there’s some pretty big talent backing this project up. Unlike the other three shows mentioned, which are headed to Fox, Constantine will hit NBC this fall. (Constantine)
Not bad. Not bad at all. I’m particularly interested, as I’m sure most people will be, in seeing how Gotham turns out. TV is a ruthless landscape where TV networks cancel shows just as quickly as they’re announced, but geek culture is at an all-time high right now, so it remains to be seen how these shows will be received. We’ll be sure to update this post if other shows of note from additional TV networks are announced.
