Jack Black Goosebumps

There were a lot of new releases this weekend, and they definitely shook up the top five at the box office.

1. Goosebumps

The Goosebumps movie that poses the theory that all of the children’s horror books can come to life had a solid opening weekend. The film took in $23.5M off of its $58M budget. Not a massive opening, but with Halloween just a few weeks away it should have some staying power.

2. The Martian

The Martian slipped into second place this weekend with $21.5M for a new domestic total of $143.79M off of its $108M budget. Globally it has hit $319.1M, so using the “double your budget” formula to determine a film’s financial success, it’s doing just fine.

3. Bridge of Spies

Steven Spielberg’s latest film, Bridge of Spies, landed in third place in its opening weekend with $15.38M off of a $40M budget. Globally it should have no problems hitting profitability.

4. Crimson Peak

The latest film from Guillermo del Toro opened quietly to just $12.85M to land in fourth place. Reports are it’s not doing well in the foreign markets, so hitting profit off of a $55M budget may be a tough one.

5. Hotel Transylvania 2

Rounding out the top five was Hotel Transylvania 2 with $12.25M and a new domestic total of $136.4M, and a global total of $267.5M. It’s still outpacing the original film in the U.S., so all things point to this franchise having some life to it.
