Google will add another experienced piece of talent from the gaming industry.
The latest executive joining Google as it explores the possibility of a new cloud-based platform is Richard Marks. During his time with Sony, Marks was an engineer who aided in the development of the PlayStation Move and the PlayStation VR. Both products are unique in that they use motion or virtual reality rather than a traditional controller alone.
As of now, it feels like there will be dedicated hardware to use the game streaming service on. Google, according to Kotaku, would like to offer a full-fledged platform like Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox where hardware and software come from one place.
Marks, however, will be on the Advanced Technology and Projects team. It’s unclear if Google’s ambitious division is working on gaming in any capacity. From its recent moves, Google does seem very interested in getting a competitor out there.
The Mountain View-based company confirmed its latest hiring but told VentureBeat nothing about aspirations in gaming:
“ATAP is at the intersection of science and application where our goal is to solve significant problems and close the gap between what if and what is. We’re super excited about Richard joining the senior team and look forward to his contributions.”
In early 2018, Google also hired Phil Harrison from Sony to oversee its efforts in gaming. Other talent includes industry veterans from Sony, Microsoft, and countless publishers/developers. Rather than assembling a team of newbies, Google will have experience lead the way.
Google showed up at GDC in March and E3 in June, too. During meetings there, the company gauged interest in its platform and talked to studios about long-term deals.
The service, known as Yeti behind closed doors, could debut in 2019. Despite the company’s history of abandoning projects far along in development, Google has shown signs of serious commitment. After picking up so much talent from its future competitors, Google seems likely to dive into gaming at some point.
