Google Translate on Android is an amazing tool. It lets you speak phrases, translate them and have them read out in another language. Or you can write it down and translate the text directly. I've used the applications dozens of times while traveling, and it's one of the main reasons I usually carry an Android phone when I go overseas.

Now the application doesn't even require an Internet connection. Google recently updated Translate for Android with an offline mode that allows you to store entire language packs. It's not really a replacement, Google warned, noting that the online version of the application is more comprehensive than the offline mode.

I'll definitely be installing a few language packs ahead of my next trip. You never know when you'll be stuck without a connection.
