With Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 announced and the iPhone 8 expected in September, it looks like the last major smartphone of 2017 will be the Pixel 2. It will be Google’s follow-up to the warmly-received Pixel, which the search giant unleashed upon the world late last year.
Hype surrounding the Pixel 2 has already started with many leaks and concepts coming out. If you liked last year’s Pixel, you’re in for a treat.
Here’s what we can expect from the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.
When will it be announced?
Last year, Google held the event to announce the Pixel on October. Most companies usually wait at least a full calendar year before announcing follow-up. By that logic, the most logical date for the Pixel to be announced is October.
Leaker Evan Blass previously said the Pixel 2 will be unveiled on Thursday, October 5, 2017, which falls just after the October 4 Pixel event last year.
The October 5 date hasn’t been confirmed by Google, but it makes sense.
Samsung picked March to announce the Galaxy S line and August to announce the Galaxy Note line, Apple chose September to announce its new iPhones, and now it looks like Google is sticking with October as the month it’ll show off its newest flagship smartphones. It also doesn’t hurt that this is just before the holiday season.
How much will the design change?
Overall, the first Pixel phone was a fantastic phone. Its software was great and its build was sturdy aluminum and glass. But one area where it didn’t quite push the envelope was with its reserved design.
There are two major rumors that have sprung forth regarding the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL’s design that offer vastly different takes.
The first one says that Google will slightly change the overall design of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Images of a prototype were released earlier this month that showed off a front that looks strikingly similar to the Nexus 6P with dual-stereo speakers.
The second rumor making the rounds states the Pixel 2 XL will receive a major redesign, but the smaller Pixel 2 will get left in the dark. This news came from Venture Beat, stating the Pixel 2 will retain a similar design to the current Pixel, with the noticeable bezels on the front. The Pixel 2 XL will adopt a new edge-to-edge design that will be similar to what we’ve seen from Samsung and LG’s new phones.
Venture Beat’s report also revealed the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will include he squeezable frame similar to what we saw from the HTC U11. There’s also a rumor that claims neither device will have a headphone jack.
From the leaked renders we’ve seen, the back of the Pixel 2 is expected to feature the same aluminum frame with the glass frame on top.
What kind of specs will it have?
Google is expected to follow the same format it did year by including the same identical specs in each model, with only the display serving as the main differentiator.
So what kind of specs are we talking about? The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will be the first major smartphone to run the new Snapdragon 836 processor. There was talk Samsung would get the new processor for the Note 8, but it didn’t. This will be buoyed by 4GB of RAM.
A 5-inch display is expected to be on the Pixel 2, and a 6-inch display will be on the Pixel 2 XL. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL should also be the first Android devices to come with Android Oreo out of the box.
Those are the only specs that have been revealed so far. Talk of a dual-camera has filtered in and out, but no details have emerged as to whether Google’s new flagships will actually add a second camera.
We are hoping that Google adds wireless charging and a water and dust resistant build, but neither of those have been mentioned in early Pixel 2 rumors.
The information we included has not been confirmed, and won’t be until Google takes the stage for the supposed October 5 event.
Until then, this is our best guess so far with all the information we’ve collected of what to expect.
