Google is preparing to launch a new 8-inch tablet this April, DigiTimes reports citing Taiwan-based supply chain sources. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors that a Nexus 8 is in the works, but DigiTimes doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to breaking mobile news, so we’ll leave this story in the “maybe” pile for now.

The report notes that Google has previously partnered with the Taiwan-based ASUS on its Nexus 7 line, suggesting the two companies could continue theat partnership with an 8-inch Nexus. However, it’s also possible that another Taiwanese manufacturer could be tapped to design the next Google tablet. A report out of Taiwan just yesterday claimed HTC is developing a new Nexus slate after ignoring the tablet market for years.

Whoever ends up developing the alleged Nexus 8, the tablet would make a great addition to Google’s lineup of stock Android devices. It would also be a smart move for the search giant, allowing Google to pivot away from the increasingly crowded 7-inch category and challenge Apple’s 7.9-inch Retina iPad mini with a cheaper alternative.
