Google acquired a company called Bump back in September. Bump was a popular mobile application that allowed users to share files across different devices. While we originally hoped the acquisition might mean a release of a re-branded Bump application as part of a future iteration of Android, it sounds like the service is being buried instead.
The Bump team announced recently that it's completely shutting down the service, in addition to one of its other products called Flock, starting on January 31 when both will be pulled from the iOS and Android app stores. "After this date, neither app will work, and all user data will be deleted," CEO David Lieb said in a blog post, noting that data can be exported before Jan. 31. Lieb said the team made the decision because it's now "deeply focused" on new projects at Google. "In many ways, Bump was a revolutionary product that inspired many subsequent advances and helped push the world forward. We hope our new creations at Google will do the same."
We assume Lieb wouldn't ditch his baby unless there really was something much better being worked on. Hopefully it involves cross device sharing, too, and hopefully we learn more about the projects sooner than later. Did you use Bump? Will you miss it?
