Godzilla was released three long years ago and was a runaway success. It was the first piece of Warner Bros.’ Monsterverse that will pit some of the biggest monsters in cinema history in epic battles.
Its sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, has been mired in secrecy, with the monsters involved and plot completely hidden, but director Michael Dougherty has pulled back the veil with a tweet announcing principal photography has wrapped with a very interesting teaser image.
Dougherty posted two tweets. The first one is fairly insignificant; it’s just a dark picture of his working desk with the caption, “Last day.” The second tweet is much more informative. It’s an image of light holographic displayed on a wall with the caption, “That’s a wrap. Thank you to my amazing cast and crew.”
The image tells a very interesting story. It shows a figure that looks like Godzilla. Other figures next to it shows what looks a lot like Mothra and King Ghidorah. Up until this point, it has been speculated that these two giant monsters would appear in the sequel, but no details have been revealed, until now.
This doesn’t confirm that either monster will appear in the movie, but it is interesting that they are being included in a celebration of the movie. If Godzilla did have to fight them, that would cement his status as the “King of the Monsters.” That makes too much sense.
We’re still no more privy to the plot of Godzilla 2, but it may pick up right after the events of the first entry. Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins are returning to reprise their roles while Vera Farmiga and Milly Bobby Brown will portray new characters.
In the second Monsterverse movie, Kong: Skull Island, it was revealed that many gigantic kaiju monsters existed before and may show up in later movies. Mothra and King Ghidorah were among them.
Production on Godzilla: King of the Monsters may have wrapped up production, but we won’t be seeing it anytime soon. It’s scheduled to be release for March 2019. That’s a long time away.
After that, the fourth Monsterverse movie will be Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020 that pits the universe’s two titular characters against each other. That movie can’t get here soon enough.
