GameStop has announced a new program, called PowerPass, that will surely appeal to avid gamers: For just $60, consumers can get unlimited rental access to the retailer's stock of pre-owned games.
The idea behind PowerPass is to let gamers experience as many titles as possible, whether on PS4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. If you have a huge backlog of games you want to play with no way to afford them, PowerPass may be a solid solution. It's worth noting, however, that the $60 only gives you a PowerPass membership for six months.
What's especially cool is that GameStop will offer all PowerPass subscribers a free preowned game after the six months are up. So, for example, if a preowned copy of Super Mario Odyssey is available, you can choose that.
GameStop said there's no limit on the games you can play during the six months. If it's available at a physical GameStop location, you can check it out. Unfortunately, the new program doesn't extend to games that are listed online, so if there isn't a GameStop in your area, you're out of luck.
To take advantage of PowerPass, you also have to be a PowerUp Rewards member, which will allow GameStop to track which games have been rented out by customers.
It will be interesting to see how this one shakes out. On the one hand, PowerPass could be a great way for gamers to experience a wider library of titles, introducing them to games they might not have played.
Conversely, the program could be frustrating if the right preowned games are never available to check out. We'll find out when PowerPass launches on November 19.
